What I’m reading, Titanic Week 2024

These are the books I selected to read this Titanic Week, which runs from April 10 (anniversary of initial departure) through April 18 (arrival of survivors in New York on Carpathia). It may seem ambitious, yet I’ve already finished two (as Titanic Week started yesterday) and I’ve also got some upcoming days off from work.

I plan to post my reviews on my Goodreads page, so feel free to follow me there too!

The people

Every year, I include at least one passenger or crew biography, along with other works that connect me to those on board. My selections for 2024 are:

  • A Gilded Tragedy: West Virginia’s TITANIC Widow, by Brandon Whited (a biography of Eloise Hughes Smith)
  • The Ship of Dreams: The Sinking of the Titanic and the End of the Edwardian Era, by Gareth Russell
  • Southampton: The Postcard Collection, by Peter Wardell, Ben Waring, Rod Andrews (historical photographs to allow me to visit the Southampton that was home to many crew members)

The events

For this year’s history lessons, my choices are:

  • There’s Talk of an Iceberg”: A Titanic Investigation, by George Behe
  • April 14, 1912: TITANIC, by David Ross

The tradition

Every April 14, I honor the anniversary by reading A Night to Remember, by Walter Lord. Even after all these years, I still pick up on something new.
