Through vintage glass: The launch of Boston’s 2024 cruise season with NORWEGIAN GEM

The 2024 cruise season in Boston kicked off yesterday as NORWEGIAN GEM boarded passengers for a 7-night round-trip voyage to Bermuda.

As it was a rainy and windy afternoon, I opted to photograph her departure from indoors. Here’s how she appeared through 125-year-old wavy glass and 50-year-old storm windows. That’s Graves Light in the distance.

A midsize cruise ship is off in the distance in profile the camera placing it between a nearby tree and nearby Victorian house. The ship appears wavy due to the glass window the photographer was standing behind.

NORWEGIAN GEM is scheduled for Bermuda cruises every Friday through August 23 (with Bar Harbor added starting April 24). She’ll then do a variety of Canada cruises that depart weekly or bi-weekly through October 18.

The Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) ship is one of 8 cruise ships that will home port in Boston this year. I’ll try to catch as many as I can.

White hulled cruise ship features hull art resembling individual gem stones in deep red, orange, light green, and blue arranged by color.
